Quick summary

Six kilometres of open sand under striped red cliffs — the Algarve's great walking beach, with sunrise to yourself if you want it.

Six kilometres of uninterrupted soft sand beneath dramatic red-and-white striped cliffs, running from Olhos de Água to Vilamoura. Long morning walks here are an Algarve ritual.

Local tips

  • Check the tide — low tide reveals the widest strip of packed sand for walking.
  • Start from the Olhos de Água end for the old fishing-village character.
  • The cliff colours are most vivid in the first hour of light.

Best time to visit

  • September–October

Warm sea, thinner crowds and long golden evenings.

  • Spring

Wildflowers on the cliff top and walkers-only stretches of sand.

Quietest hours & crowds

  • 07:00–10:00

Joggers, dog-walkers and fishermen share six empty kilometres.

  • After 17:00

Day-trippers drift back to their hotels.

Crowd level

Busy near each resort access in summer; walk ten minutes along the sand and the density drops sharply.
