Quick summary

Eleven kilometres of wild barrier-island sand between the Ria Formosa lagoon and the Atlantic — Tavira's slow, salty escape.

An eleven-kilometre barrier island reached by ferry or footbridge, where sand stretches nearly empty between the lagoon and open ocean. The island's warm, shallow banks are perfect for children.

Local tips

  • Check the last ferry time before you wander east.
  • Carry cash — not every kiosk takes cards.
  • Walk ten minutes past the landing and you will find your own patch of island.

Best time to visit

  • June–September

Ferries run frequently and beach bars are open.

  • September

Peak sea temperature with a fraction of the August traffic.

Quietest hours & crowds

  • Before 11:00

First-boat calm — the island belongs to waders and fishermen.

  • After 16:00

Day-trippers catch the earlier boats home.

Crowd level

Moderate — the ferry schedule keeps numbers civilised even in August.

The practical details

Best time for photography

Golden hour, when the lagoon channels go mirror-flat and the anchor cemetery at the Barril end silhouettes against the light.

Parking

None on the island. Leave the car at Cais das Quatro Águas for the ferry, or at Pedras d'el Rei for the footbridge and miniature train.

Accessibility

Reached by passenger ferry or a kilometre-long footbridge (with a seasonal tourist train). Sand is soft beyond the boardwalks, so mobility access is limited — ask boat crews about assistance.

Family suitability

Superb for children: warm shallow lagoon banks, endless sand and kiosks for ice cream in season.

Facilities

  • Seasonal beach restaurants & kiosks
  • Sunbeds near the ferry landing
  • Toilets in season
  • Lifeguarded in season

Sunset

From the western end near the footbridge, the sun sets straight down the lagoon — bring a jacket, the breeze picks up.

Timing notes are editorial guidance based on each beach's orientation and seasonality — not guarantees.
